Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny passed away on Friday at the Arctic prison colony where he was serving a 19-year term, as confirmed by Russia’s federal penitentiary service.

Navalny lost consciousness after a walk and despite efforts by medical personnel, he could not be revived, the prison service stated, according to media reports.

“After the walk, Navalny felt unwell, quickly losing consciousness. Medical staff promptly responded, and an ambulance was summoned,” the statement read.

“Resuscitation attempts were made but were unsuccessful. Paramedics confirmed the death of the convict. The causes of death are currently under investigation.”

Navalny’s press secretary, Kira Yarmysh, mentioned that his team had not been informed of his demise. “Alexei’s lawyer is en route to Kharp,” where his prison colony is located, she announced on social media.

According to Russian news agencies, citing his spokesman, President Vladimir Putin had been notified of Navalny’s passing.

Navalny, 47, Russia’s most prominent opposition figure, gained widespread support for his critiques of corruption in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. His YouTube exposés garnered millions of views and mobilized tens of thousands of Russians to protest, despite harsh anti-protest laws.

He was imprisoned in early 2021 upon returning to Russia from Germany, where he was recovering from a near-fatal poisoning attack with Novichok.
