Dr M made many mistakes during PH’s 22-month administration – Ronnie Liu

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 – DAP veteran Ronnie Liu has expressed his concern that voters will not go out and vote for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 15th General Election.

This, the Sungai Pelek assemblyman said, was due to the negative perception towards the coalition’s 22-month rule following their victory in the last election.

“I am worried that many voters will not go out to cast their votes this time.

“Back then they put their trust in PH to become a new government, but unfortunately, it was destroyed by (Tun Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) and those who followed him,” he said in an interview with The Malaya Post last night.

Ronnie Liu said during the 22-month that PH was in power, Dr Mahathir, who was the then prime minister, made many mistakes, among others, accepting political frogs, saying that the manifesto is not a bible that has to be abided by religiously and letting certain individuals destroy the unity of PH and PKR.

He said while some people might have said that the PH supporters would continue to vote since this time is a general election, “I am not as confident as they, because the PH voters did not cast their votes during the Melaka and Johor by-elections.

“For that reason, if the top leadership of PH is willing to admit their mistakes, weaknesses, and sincerely apologies to the people, there is a huge possibility that the people will change their minds.

“I believe that people want us to admit our mistakes. If we dare to do so, they will likely give us a second chance and new mandate, as the PH coalition is still relevant.”

Asked about a situation where some voters are still unclear who to cast their votes for in the election, along with the possibility of multi-cornered fights, causing a split in votes, Liu said; “It is very likely. (But) if the people do not want that, they can give their votes to PH.

“Dr Mahathir, the person who is responsible (for the people no longer supportive of the coalition) is no longer in PH.

“Now PH on (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim) is different. He is a leader that holds dearly to the concept of Ketuanan Rakyat (People Supremacy), instead of ‘Ketuanan Melayu (Malay Supremacy)’. We do not have many such leaders.

“I believe that the PH government under Anwar’s leadership will be different from the PH government that was under Dr Mahathir,” he said.

He added that the top leaders of political parties also have a big responsibility to field candidates who are reliable and have big potential to serve the people.

“Do not field substandard candidates or those who cannot serve the people. The people are frustrated by the same candidates, who have never been to the ground being fielded as a candidates again.”
