Actor Danny Aiello dead at 86, star of ‘Moonstruck’ and ‘Do The Right Thing’

Actor Danny Aiello, a native New Yorker whose lengthy resume included memorable roles in “Do The Right Thing” and “Moonstruck,” died Thursday. He was 86.

Aiello, a favorite of directors Woody Allen, Spike Lee and Robert Altman, passed away Thursday at a New Jersey medical facility after a sudden illness brought on by an infection, according to his publicist, Tracey Miller.

The Manhattanite, the fifth of six kids, worked as a union rep for bus drivers and a bouncer at The Improv comedy club before his acting career finally took off when Aiello was in his late 30s.

He starred opposite Robert De Niro in “Bang The Drum Slowly,” a 1973 tear-jerker about a dying baseball player, and made a cameo in “The Godfather II.” His work opposite Cher in “Moonstruck” helped her win an Oscar.
